Dr Michael Hymans

Dr Michael Hymans is a Chartered Educational and Clinical Psychologist and is a member of the Association of Educational Psychologists. He has over 30 years experience working with children and their parents. He had taught in pupil referral units whose intake often included children with attachment disorders, social, emotional and behavioural disorders and children on the child protection register.

His experience as a psychologist  working as the Principal Educational Psychologist in a local authority children’s services department. He has also taught in schools and pupil referral units whose intake often included children with attachment disorders, social, emotional and behavioural disorders and children on the child protection register.  He regularly works with children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders.

Dr Hymans has expertise in all aspects of child development: cognitive, linguistic, sensory, physical, social, behavioural and emotional and is able to identify children and young people whose development is either delayed or disordered and to consider why this might be and advise about needs.

Whilst the focus of his work is invariably the child or young person, he has undertaken cognitive and personality assessments of adults and assessments of adults in their roles as parents/carers.  Dr Hymans has facilitated a fathers groups for children with special educational needs for 13 years. He continues to practice as a Psychologist and work in a private capacity in four different local authority primary schools and in a secondary school; and, a special school for children with profound and multiple learning difficulties.

As an expert witness, he undertakes assessment of risk in cases where parents are having emotional difficulties in caring for their children and the parent-child relationship is starting to break down. He also assesses the impact of all forms of child abuse on the child and young person and their families and the impact of parenting and school contexts on educational performance. He undertakes all aspects of Special Educational Needs work, including reports for, and attendance at Special Educational Needs and Disability Tribunals.
