Dr Andrew Derry is a clinical psychologist and family therapist and has 25 years of post-qualification experience of working with parents, children and families.  He has specialist training and experience in the relationship between early parent-child attachment influences child development but also parenting, personality and mental health difficulties and ultimately the risks to a child.  He works with parents and children involved in high conflict post separation specialising in parental rejection, parental alienation and contact disputes, lecturing and training professionals, as well as reporting to the family courts.

He also undertakes forensic risk assessments for the Criminal Courts and Parole Boards and has worked for the NHS for 14 years, managing psychology services in medium and low secure forensic units. He has written substance abuse treatment programmes for offenders with severe mental health and personality problems.

He is a trauma specialist and EMDR therapist offering specialist assessments in cases of personal injury and professional negligence

He has trained as a family practitioner and worked in the family therapy department of Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services.  In his psychology clinic in Brighton and Hove, he regularly works with relationship problems and couples separating, focusing on the needs of the children during this time.  He has also worked with families fostering or adopting traumatised children with emotional or behavioural difficulties.

Dr Derry works with both individuals and families to develop an in-depth understanding the difficulties they are experiencing. This includes the impact of mental illness, personality problems, substance abuse, violence, sexual or domestic violence or child abuse. He had a broad-based training across psychological therapies including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, psycho-dynamic psychotherapy and family therapy to find the right approach for each person’s needs.
