Dr Prakash Raviraj

Dr Raviraj is an independent consultant forensic psychiatrist based in Manchester. He is hospital medical director at Cygnet Hospital, Wyke, Yorkshire. He is a medical member of the First Tier Tribunal-Mental Health and a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (FRCPsych). He is an Approved Clinician (AC) under the terms of the amended 2007 Mental Health Act and approved under Section 12 (2) of the Mental Health Act 1983. He holds a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Forensic Psychiatry and also a Master of Laws Degree (LLM) in Mental Health Law.

Dr Raviraj worked as a full time consultant at the Spinney for 5 years at Atherton. He specialises in assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of mentally disordered offenders with schizophrenia, personality disorder and substance misuse issues. He has unique clinical experience of working in high, medium, low secure and community forensic psychiatric Services, as well as working in various prisons across the North of England. He regularly provided reports to the local Criminal Courts on offenders with mental health issues.

In his first role as a NHS gatekeeper at Prestwich Hospital, he advised district psychiatric services, prisons, MAPPA, probation and Social Services, in the Greater Manchester area regarding the risk management of patients. He was the academic lead and co-ordinated medical student teaching and multidisciplinary teaching programme at the Edenfield Centre. He also taught Specialist Trainees in psychiatry at the Leeds and Manchester Universities.
